Does anyone else suffer from this problem:

I listen to music — specifically new-to-me music — in the same way I read books. I can’t just have it on in the background. I sit quietly and listen attentively. I take in every note and lyric and process it in the same way I would the first few pages of a novel. If I think it’s stupid (like non-sensical lyrics which seem to be very popular among today’s rock and/or roll bands) I immediately hate the whole thing and give up on the band. If I feel like the music is lacking or there’s an off beat or just something aural that turns me off, I’m done with the band.

I should point out that, while I’m a decent guitarist and can carry a beat on the drums, I’m in no way a musician or understand music theory. I also don’t think I’ve ever written a complete song, but god knows I tried in high school.

Because of this, I’m finding it difficult to discover new music. It also means I go through like six-month stretches where I listen to only three or four artists.

Am I autistic or just anal-retentive?

  1. doug answered: I’d guess (or hope) neither. This sounds pretty close to my experience, only swap Cubase/Logic/Ableton for guitar.
